In the Spring Festival of 2024, I returned to my grandmother’s hometown for the first time in twelve years. While burning joss paper for my late grandmother, I began photographing the old house and surrounding rural landscape. Like old photographs that gradually fade with time, memories of home also slowly disappear. Through these photographs, I sought to preserve traces of the land and the life she had once known. The zine’s visual language centers on the act of “burning.” The cover is cut into charred, irregular shapes, revealing the inner pages through small openings. The edges of the cover and selected photographs are also burned by hand. Black ink and translucent silver screen printing create images and text that shift between blurred and clear depending on the viewing angle. Rough Japanese washi paper, reminiscent of joss paper, was used for the photographs on the packaging and title page.
